Review of the Ryzen 7 9850X3D processor. We test and review the processor many PC gamers have been waiting for: the Ryzen 7 9850X3D. With a large L3 cache allocation, this Zen 5-based CPU is designed to improve gaming performance without requiring a platform change. It remains compatible with existing AM5 motherboards such as X670 and B650, typically needing nothing more than a BIOS update. The past few months have been quiet for desktop CPUs. When the Ryzen 9000 series launched, expectations were high for a meaningful generational jump. Instead, AMD focused heavily on power efficiency and delivered modest performance gains. For many users, that made an upgrade from Ryzen 7000 difficult to justify-especially with the Ryzen 7000X3D chips already offering strong gaming results. Intel's Arrow Lake launch added more noise to the market. Despite the pre-release expectations, Core Ultra Series 200 never outshined Ryzen 9000 in the areas that matter most for enthusiast gaming. The platform shows competitive multi-thread and single-thread capability, but it hasn't become the default recommendation for high-FPS gaming builds. In our coverage of Ryzen 9000 and Core Ultra 200, we repeatedly suggested holding off for the Ryzen 9000X3D lineup-and now the the even faster chips arrives, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D.
