MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z Tested

MSI has revealed a limited-run GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z that targets high-power operation with an integrated 360 mm AIO liquid cooling solution. The design pairs a full-cover coldplate with a 360 mm radiator, aiming to control heat from the GPU package, memory, and power delivery circuitry under sustained load. A built-in 8-inch display is part of the shroud assembly, intended for monitoring and personalization, and the card is expected to ship with accessories that support vertical mounting. A key engineering focus is the custom PCB and power delivery layout. The Lightning Z is described as using a 40-phase VRM configuration and a PCB with a 3 oz copper layer, which is thicker than typical multi-layer boards used in consumer GPUs. The intent is to improve current handling, reduce losses, and provide better thermal distribution through the board. MSI also references an extended VRM design and measurement points aimed at advanced tuning scenarios, suggesting the product is built with diagnostics and manual tuning in mind rather than being a purely cosmetic special edition.
